Thinking like a creative and planning like a strategist

On ITV Wales's The Sharp End analysing social media reaction during the 2015 election debates

I’m an expert in creative social media strategies and I work with corporate comms and marketing pros to build skills and confidence.

My clients are bright and talented, but often overwhelmed by huge workloads and they want to find time to tap into their creativity.

Often my role is as much about improving skills, as it is about building confidence.

Together we design more ambitious social media strategies, get tonnes more social media engagement and get better results from their comms.

A Comms Creative

My cartoons are a great example of how I use my creativity to make sense of the world, and engage my audience.  I find drawing things helps me describe problems and communicate ideas.

And I get bags of inspiration from my Comms Creative community – on email and in the Facebook group.

The laughs and support shared amongst bright communications and marketing professionals in our group helps us all become more creative, fearless and proud.

TV and conference speaking

I’m a weird kind of introvert: I love to spend time alone drawing or reading, but I can’t resist the opportunity to speak to audiences about those topics I geek out about: communications, social media, and society.

My corporate comms background

I first started using social media when I was a communications officer in local government. Back in 2007 with a MySpace page dedicated to getting people to help a council restore a town hall.

There was no rulebook, and the things I learned in those early days were invaluable.

During my time in the council, I worked on many creative digital communications projects designed to be shared and talked about, like this campaign about dog poo or this social media response to snowy weather or this ‘learn as you do’ approach to a budget consultation on YouTube.

Then I built a business helping comms teams tackle the problems I had faced as a comms and digital team leader.

God, I love it! Finding creative solutions, unleashing talent from within bright (but usually overworked) clients – it brings me joy.

Awards

Other people recognising my work with awards has helped me battle the imposter syndrome.
